The story of how I ran for mayor, and made 0 impact. - A Brief History - - theories on why BH failed - * Babe on advertising for welfare Literally, he remembers/claims that there were billboards down South,
advertising Benton Harbor as having the most lucrative social
benefits. It's like.. a trap for the laziest, crookedest people.
* blind leading the blind (dumb parents) It's generations deep; Try to put yourself in the place of someone
whose parents didn't bother with school, because their parents before
them didn't bother with school, because their grandparents didn't
bother with school. Try to believe that you will go to college, and
settle down into the suburbs. Across the river. * has it failed? stuck holding the bag. I mean, what if this situation is not solvable? Or what if this
situation is the solution for everyone else? This is a truly grey
moral area. We talk about people being born with a silver spoon, and it's a real
thing. Consider though, that you work your entire life, accumulate
wealth, and have a family. I would want to give my children an
advantage over their peers. It's not really fair to me, to not permit
me to do that. It's not really fair to my children's peers that I do.
So what's the solution? - the downward spiral of poverty - * schools fail, new leaders are incompetent You have a classroom full of students who do not believe that school
is important. How can you expect teachers to hold these children to
the same standards as suburban children with a quarter or less of the
budget? Rich schools give wealthy children a huge advantage--and I
have profited by this, thankyou--and do genuinely keep the upper class
wealthier. * genuine talent is proven by escape. Brain Drain is the least of it. Anyone who is attractive or
intelligent quickly discovers how easy it is to live elsewhere and
anywhere. Who remains? Not in an insulting way, but think about it.
And in Benton Harbor, where for generations most of the local
population cannot afford to leave, there are a lot of second cousins. Even the idea that you are escaping, fundamentally implies that
returning would be ridiculous. * economy based entirely on handouts Republicans may gloat, but these are the poorest of the poor; they are
the Welfare Aristocracy. Most of the money that comes into Benton
Harbor is through non-profit organizations. That's not an
exaggeration. There are 100+ churches, 100+ non-profits, and a dozen
liquor stores. There isn't a damn grocery store. That's in Benton
Township. * Cornerstone, cheap land, and gentrification Ironically, it's in one of the most beautiful places on the planet
Earth. And not too far from Chicago. So, they are building a very,
very expensive golf course. Revitalization? Gentrification?
- the glimmer of hope - * Cheaper or Better than your competition My theory of making money is this: You can be cheaper, faster, or
better than your competition. That's the crazy market-balance of
capitalism. * The Livery The Livery is better. They make absolutely world class beer from the
finest ingredients they can find. And they are one of the few new
businesses to take root in Benton Harbor. * Massive Cash Influx (golfing by the shores of Lake Michigan) - the true persistence of poverty - * Save Jean Klockers, how I came to learn to love to golf * Crime * Apathy * Mistrust - My Platform * Pick up the trash * Tax vacant properties * Invest in the freaking schools - Death by Papercut * Loss of election (as predicted) * Different is not Ignorant, political theories and overestimations - A compatible system * How we train professional politicians * Backwards compatibility and Open Source * Doublepaw, and the State Theater - Black and White * The Tacked On Chapter (it's not really the problem) * "Easiest" Solution (seperate and apathetic) * Fear v. Annoyance * If you win, we all lose - Epilogue and Conclusions * Come home, Michigan
