Finally got around to jailbreaking my ipod touch.  Kept a running irc log of the hillarity:

16:35 <@japherwocky> wonder if i could tackle that in a few hours
16:35 <@yama> what os would it run ?
16:38 <@japherwocky> i think it still runs the iphone os
16:38 <@japherwocky> redsn0w looks like the right program to use
16:42 <@japherwocky> looks like i need itunes/windows anyhow..
16:55 <@japherwocky> getting the official 3.0 firmware update
16:56 <@yama> yeah, i 'm doing all this crap in windows too
16:57 <@japherwocky> man, i wonder if itunes will let me backup the music
16:57 <@japherwocky> dang :\
16:57 <@japherwocky> i bet it won't without a fight
16:58 <@yama> reasons i hate vendor lock-in
17:04 <@japherwocky> it's like you can see windows thinking
17:04 <@japherwocky> it's so slow sometimes
17:05 <@japherwocky> though the little fadeys are nice
17:05 <@japherwocky> and it seems like it pauses stuff if you don't alt-tab to it
17:10 <@japherwocky> restarting for itunes
17:15 <@japherwocky> dude..
17:15 <@japherwocky> ok 1
17:15 <@japherwocky> what does it even DO when it shuts down
17:15 <@japherwocky> how does that take so long?!
17:15 <@japherwocky> 2
17:16 <@japherwocky> how does windows 7 not do multiple desktops
17:16 <@japherwocky> ctrl+alt+arrowkeys
17:16 <@japherwocky> linux does it, mac does it
17:16 <@japherwocky> windows people don't even know what they're missing
17:17 <@japherwocky> and there are already updates available
17:17 <@japherwocky> wtf
17:17 <@japherwocky> it just installed updates
17:17 <@japherwocky> i had to tell it 3 times to not restart
17:17 <@japherwocky> good lord
17:20 <@yama> lol, are you running that win7 ultimate that i gave you ?
17:21 <@japherwocky> ok, itunes
17:21 <@japherwocky> might be the same one
17:21 <@japherwocky> it's better than vista
17:22 <@japherwocky> ok.. so
17:22 <@japherwocky> i click next/default through the wizard
17:23 <@japherwocky> the last screen says
17:23 <@japherwocky> and of course i can't copy/paste it
17:23 <@japherwocky> iTunes was not properly installed.  If you wish to import or burn CDs you need to reinstall iTunes.
17:25 <@japherwocky> it gave me something called
17:25 <@japherwocky> ninja tuna
17:25 <@japherwocky> by mr. scruff
17:26 <@japherwocky> and something named 'foo'
17:30 <@japherwocky> mr scruff is pretty good
17:30 <@japherwocky> itunes won't recognize my touch without 64bit
17:30 <@japherwocky> uninstall/reinstall
17:33 <@japherwocky> QuickTime: Apparently Still a Thing
17:34 <@japherwocky> my touch beeped and the installer froze
17:35 <@japherwocky> haha, it was windows to the rescue
17:35 <@japherwocky> the windows soslowsudo
17:38 <@japherwocky> ok, itunes is installing
17:38 <@japherwocky> mr scruff is back!
17:39 <@japherwocky> nice, it made me put in my keypad code
17:39 <@japherwocky> recognized the japherpoddy

17:52 <@japherwocky> waiting for ipod...
17:52 <@japherwocky> progress bar is moving oh so slightly
17:58 <@japherwocky> ok
17:58 <@japherwocky> i'm now at step 0 of the tutorial
18:03 <@japherwocky> so why is the version i downloaded .7.1
18:03 <@japherwocky> but the new one is like .9.4
18:04 <@japherwocky> fuck it, i like 71
18:04 <@japherwocky> heh
18:04 <@japherwocky> 7zip thinks the file is no good
18:04 <@japherwocky> fuck it
18:04 <@japherwocky> i like .9.4
18:05 <@japherwocky> huh, ctrl/alt/arrow switches irssi windows in putty
18:21 <@japherwocky> redsn0w worked nicely :)

and voila, Cydia appears!  I set up openssh and all of a sudden:

japherwocky@japhtop:~/Music$ scp -r Shpongle\ -\ Ineffable\ Mysteries\ from\ Shpongleland/ root@192.168.1.128:/var/mobile/Library/Downloads/

I can scp my own music to my own device wirelessly over my own network.  WELCOME TO THE FUTURE!

Is it my fault?  Is it a FB bug?

And Firebug instantly crashes Firefox upon trying to make any sense of wtf is going on here.

ramblin gamblin man

this is some prime chuck jagers material:

Yeah, gonna tell my tale
Come on,
Come on.
Give a listen,
Cause I was born lonely
Down by the riverside.
Learned to spin fortune wheel
And throw dice.
And I was just thirteen
When I had to leave home.
Knew I couldn't stick around,
Had to roam.
I ain't good lookin',
But you know I ain't shy.
Ain't afraid to look a girl
In the eye.
So if you need some lovin'
And you need it right away,
Just take a little time out
And maybe I'll stay.

Then I got to ramble,
Ramblin' man.
Lord I got to gamble,
Gamblin' man.
Ahh I got to ramble,
Ramblin' man.
And I was born a ramblin' gamblin' man.

I hope you got money,
Sho gonna need some.
Ain't gonna run on lovin'
And I got to run.
I got to keep movin',
Never gonna slow down.
You can have your funky world,
See ya 'round.

I got to ramble,
Ramblin' man.
Yeah I got to gamble,
Gamblin' man.
Ahh I got to ramble,
Ramblin' man.
I was born a ramblin' gamblin' man.

A new way of thinking about government

I have preached for a few years, to anyone who would listen, about how our government is antiquated in a key way.

When the Constitution was written, it was impossible for me to type into this box, click a button, and magically deliver this text to you, nearly instantaneously.  So we elect people to fly down to DC and sit around in a room signing pieces of paper.

I don't need someone to vote for me.  I have an internet connection, I can read, I can click a damn button.

So there is the fantasy - why don't we just all vote on what we want to vote on.  Because then who would the lobbyists even go after?  They'd advertise, the same way all these politicians do.

What if the code was all open?  The entire system?

One piece of code takes the text that will become a law.  It makes a database entry.  A webserver accepts votes and talks to that database.  We tally up the shit and do what it says.  And everybody can read the code;  the code is the law, bills become patches.

But how on earth would you ever change something so dramatically?  This is fantasy!

But what if you elected me, and I gave my word that I would put the things I was supposed to vote on into the system, and then respect the decisions of the people who voted on it.  And what if you joined my voting bloc and we got you elected, and you also agreed to vote according to the system.

Maybe someone else decides our system isn't quite right and forks the code.  And they and five of their buddies get elected and vote according to their system.  It would be like political parties, except more efficient and less corrupt.
